But why is this latest study important? We asked\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oliveoiltimes.com\/features\/cardiology-olive-oil\/9808\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Antonis Pothoulakis<\/a>, an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Interventional_cardiology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">interventional cardiologist<\/a>\u00a0at the Iasis Clinic in Chania, Crete to comment.<\/p>\n<p>Pothoulakis explained that the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mayoclinic.com\/health\/metabolic%20syndrome\/DS00522\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">metabolic syndrome<\/a>\u00a0is a combination of abdominal obesity, high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol, and high blood sugar. \u201cMetabolic syndrome is connected to the obesity epidemic of our time, a big belly poisons our metabolism and a poisoned metabolism can result in type 2 diabetes, heart attacks, stroke, or sudden death,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>The new study included data from almost 535,000 people, with the conclusion that a Mediterranean style diet, which includes consumption of monounsaturated fats mainly in the form of olive oil, daily consumption of fruits, vegetables, whole grain cereals, and low-fat dairy products, weekly consumption of \ufb01sh, poultry, legumes, and a relatively low consumption of red meat, may reduce the risk of metabolic syndrome.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"post-13870 media-13870\" class=\"align-left\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" title=\"The Mediterranean Diet and Metabolic Syndrome\" src=\"https:\/\/www.oliveoiltimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/Pothoulakis1.jpg\" alt=\"the-mediterranean-diet-and-metabolic-syndrome\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>Pothoulakis noted that following the Mediterranean diet led to a small but statistically significant reduction of metabolic syndrome and improvement in\u00a0<em>all\u00a0<\/em>its individual components (waist circumference, blood pressure, high blood sugar,\u00a0low HDL and high triglycerides).<br \/>\n<span class=\"article-see-more\">SEE MORE:\u00a0<a class=\"\" title=\"Olive Oil Health Benefits\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oliveoiltimes.com\/olive-oil-health-benefits\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Olive Oil Health Benefits<\/a><\/span>\u201cAs these are average figures it means that some individuals following the Mediterranean diet could get larger improvements and some less or no improvement.
